3 Greek products on their way to PDO & PGI status

Another three unique Greek products, this time from the Region of the North Aegean, are on their way to PDO and PGI certification. According to information from the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, sardines from Kalloni in the island of Lesvos (Sardella Kallonis), which will be the first Greek sea product [please note that Avgotaracho Messolongiou aka bottarga from the Messolongi lagoon in western Greece is already registered as a PDO product] in the EU Geographical Indications register, honey from the island of Icarian, also known as “Anamma”, and Melichloro cheese from the island of Lemnos, are included in the relevant registration file prepared by the Directorate of Rural Development of the Region that will be sent to Brussels and the European Commission.

Furthermore, the Directorate of Rural Development of the Region of the North Aegean is also considering adding another product, a certain bean variety called “aspromytiko” which is cultivated in Lemnos, to the PDO and PGI register.
