The Greek aquaculture sector achieves high scores at both European and international levels, continuing to grow in a highly competitive environment.

According to Yannis Pelekanakis, Director of European Affairs of the Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization (HAPO), Greek aquaculture ranked first in the European Union in 2023. “In recent years, Greece has been a leader in the EU, being the largest producer of sea bream and sea bass in Europe, and the second largest in the Mediterranean after Turkey’’, mentioned speaking to the Athens News Agency.

As HAPO reports, 83% of Greek production in 2023 was sold across 36 markets outside the country, with Italy, Spain, and France having the largest share. It is also noted that a total of 100,361 tons of sea bream and sea bass, valued at €572.04 million, were exported in 2023.

Despite challenges posed by the adverse global economic environment, companies in this sector – which directly and indirectly employ approximately 12,000 people – made significant investments in 2023. They continued to modernize their facilities and launched initiatives promoting sustainable aquaculture practices.

These actions, combined with an emphasis on openness and exports, set Greek aquaculture in advantageous position to face future challenges.
