White wine and malagouzia produced in 2023, as well as chardonnay and xinomavro produced in 2022, were presented at a recent event by Ktima Gerovassiliou (Gerovassiliou Estate). In the red wines category, new launches involving Red Wine, Avaton and Syrah will follow. The people of the Estate also put special emphasis on the malagouzia from overripe grapes, with the visitors of the event tasting the production of 2021. Regarding the last growing season, despite the particularities of the weather conditions, there was an increase in production and an improvement in quality.
All eyes on Malagousia
With continuous investments, the company has already expanded the vineyard, reaching the levels 1,000 – 1,150 acres. After €3 million worth of investments in 2022 for a new 150 hectares vineyard mainly for malagousia production, another investment, over 1.5 million, followed last year with the scope of further expanding the vineyard by 60 hectares. This year (2024) it is expected to grow by another 40 acres.
As for the malagousia grapes, they produce some of the estate’s best wines, such as the “Malagousia from Overripe Grapes”: grapes are left to over ripen on the vines only during years when weather conditions permit. The must of these grapes is vinified in French oak barrels and then aged for 3 years in the same barrels. The alcoholic fermentation is induced slowly and terminates months later.
Significant growth
Regarding the financial figures of the Estate, 2023 sales were over €12 million, with an almost double-digit growth and exports making up about 1/3 of the total turnover. The company, which exports to 36 countries, has Germany, the UK, Cyprus, the USA and Canada as its main label destinations.
