The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food in cooperation with ELGO – Dimitra, is determined to achieve the development of Greek beekeeping, but also the protection of the product, producers as well as consumers.
As a result, procedures for the development, organization and operation of the “National Electronic Beekeeping Register” database were established, in order to create a unified digital system for recording, inventory and identification of beekeepers, beekeeping farms and beekeeping in general, in Greece.
The decision, signed by the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food Ms Fotini Arambatzis, describes, among other things, the relevant authorities that will coordinate and monitor the operation of the Register and the privileges that an active beekeeper will have, such as the issuance of an individual beekeeping identity.
Registration is mandatory for every Greek beekeeper, provided they maintain within the Greek territory at least five hives, as sole owner. In addition, beekeepers are required to declare their wholesale customers, while processing and trading companies will declare their suppliers, as well as the quantities they market. This way, authorities will be able to control both quantity and quality and –most importantly– crack down on adulterated honey.
