Greek wines in China Market

No less than 87 wineries were tuned in at the 90-minute live event organized by RECO EXPORTS on June 11 on “Hong Kong, Asia’s wine hub. Post COVID-19 era, Opportunities for Greek wineries and the Italian success-story,” proving the great importance of the Chinese market for the entirety of the wine industry.
Currently, China is the No2 largest market in the world, while the people there have started appreciating good wine and are becoming knowledgeable on the different varieties, such as Merlot or Sauvignon, boosting the competition among wine-producing countries for a piece of the action.
With Greek wine exports to China showing a sharp decline – from almost €2 million in 2011 to a mere €880 in 2018, the event aimed to highlight a roadmap of real opportunities and prospects for the promotion and development of Greek wine in China.

Acknowledging the export efforts of Greek winemakers and given the consequences of COVID-19 in the global wine industry, RECO EXPORTS took the initiative to organize the online event in order to create substantial opportunities and prospects for the development of Greek wine exports to the far East and China in particular.
In collaboration with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the purpose of the event was to create a channel of communication between the Greek wine community and the Chinese market and to highlight new, significant opportunities for Greek wines in Hong Kong and China. Furthermore, the strategic placement of Italian wines in Hong Kong and their subsequent successful consolidation to China and the rest of Asia, served as a paradigm.
Hosted by Yiannis Karakasis MW, the event consisted of a panel of experts in the field, with years of experience in the Chinese market. Important questions were asked and answered, while the growth prospects of Greek wines in China and the steps required for a proper and consistent penetration in its profitable marketplace were examined.
