ESG: Greek dairy company Delta in the top 1% worldwide

Delta is one of the largest dairy companies in Greece, producing food in a way that respects the environment and creates social and economic added value for the entire ecosystem within which it operates.

As an acknowledgement for its coherent and consistent way of operating, the company recently received a platinum distinction in EcoVadis (international assessment system) for business practices in the wider area of sustainable development. This rating places Delta in the top 1% of businesses evaluated by the organization worldwide.

According to the EcoVadis methodology, Delta was assessed both for its commitments and for the systems, policies, actions and information it provides in four areas of sustainable development: the environment, labor practices & human rights, business ethics and sustainable procurement.

This important distinction was achieved with the contribution of PwC Greece. PwC’s Sustainability & Climate Change team contributed to the design of Delta’s Sustainable Development strategy and Scientifically Based Goals as well as to the formulation of the disclosure and data management framework.

Together with the Athens University of Economics & Business and Professor Phoebe Kountouri, PwC developed the innovative tool “SDG Value Chain Assessment”: a system for collecting and processing aggregate data for systematic monitoring, evaluating ESG performance throughout the company’s value chain.

The company’s story goes back in 1952, when Aristides Daskalopoulos founds family business DELTA, employing 20 employees who deliver milk and yoghurt with 10 company owned vehicles. In 1967 the company produces its first commercial ice-cream (the brand is until today one of the leaders in this sector), and in 1986 launches Milko, the first chocolate milk drink in the Greek market. Milko was a vast commercial success, which, over the years, became synonymous with the product itself within the Greek everyday culture. Following a great number of major launches in the last 30 years, such as Life Juices, Vitaline Yoghurts, Advanced Milk for Kids, Delta is currently one of the major Greek “lovebrands”, trusted by hundreds of thousands of consumers both in Greece and abroad.
