The agri-food sector supports exports

Greek exports between January and October 2023 showed a 17.5% rise in the agri-food sector and a -7.1% overall (-0.4% excluding petroleum products).

Greek exports exceeded €42 billion in the first decade of 2023, despite their decrease of 7.1% compared to the corresponding period of 2022. According to estimates, they are expected to be around €50 billion by the end of the year, being the second best performance ever. Exports – which without petroleum products decreased slightly by 0.4% compared to last year – were mainly supported by the agri-food sector (food, fats-oils, beverages-tobacco) whose exports were increased by €1.3 billion.

In more detail, and according to the provisional data of commodity transactions announced early December 2023 by the Hellenic Statistical Authority and processed by the IEES of SEVE, the value of exports in October 2023 amounted to €4,421.3 million compared to €4,849.4 million last year, registering a decrease of 8.8%, i.e. €428.1 million. Imports amounted to €7,214.3 million and the trade deficit to €2,793.0 million, registering a decrease of 19.4% (i.e. €1,741.5 million) and 32.0% (i.e. €1,313.4 million) respectively.

Excluding petroleum products, exports amounted to €2,980.4 million compared to €3,021.8 million in October 2022 (down by €41.4 million | 1.4%), imports amounted to €5,178.2 million compared to €5,540.3 million (€362.1 million | 6.5% decrease) and the trade deficit amounted to €2,197.8 million, compared to €2,518.5 million (€320.7 million | 12 .7% decrease).

At the sectoral level, food (€507.0 million | 8.8%), machinery and vehicles (€231.3 million | 5.8%), various industrial (€3.9 million | 0 .1%), fats and oils (€614.8 million | 89.4%) and beverages and tobacco (€165.4 million | 18.0%) saw an increase in exports, chemicals remained at the same levels as last year, while industrial products (€697.6 million | -10.1%), raw materials (€195.4 million | -13.1%) and unclassified products (€81.6 million | -13.8%) recorded a decrease in exports.

In terms of destinations, 57.7% of exports, i.e. €24.7 billion, were sent to the 27 EU member countries, while 42.3%, i.e. €18.1 billion, went to Third Countries. Without petroleum products, the percentages were 67.0% (EU27) and 33.0% (Third Countries).
